The standard Spitfire driveshaft and hub is a design from the 1960s and a very cost conscious design at that. It serves the standard Mk1 to the 2 litre GT6 and Vitesse.
There is considerable room for improvement. Improvement to its’ capability and its’ durability.
Listening to and learning from Spitfire experts Classic Driving Development has taken this knowledge and produced a vastly upgraded product that deals with the familiar and known problems.
The inner UJ is the Freelander ultimate spec item. The driveshaft is made from proper controlled specification EN 24 steel.
The design of the keyway is changed to help stop the shaft from shearing (the standard drive flange is retained).
One of the biggest problem of the standard design is the needle roller bearing running directly on the shaft. Under stress and after time the bearing ‘eats into the shaft, develops a clearance and sets up angular forces on the outer ball bearing.
The new hub trunnions have a larger diameter, wider needle roller bearing running on a proper bearing inner ring. This bearing has FOUR times the capability of the original. The outer bearing is larger and has more than TWO times the capacity of the original.
The inner seal is also upgraded to a modern double seal, one lip to keep dirt out and one to keep grease in, all protected by a very effective stone guard.
Latest generation, tough dirt tolerant plastic has been used for the trunnion / upright pivot to stop the seizing problem of the standard system. This is maintenance free and very easily to take apart if necessary.
