Power Steering Pump Springs
The output of a power steering pump in terms of max pressure and flow is controlled by a pressure spring and a flow control spring.
The pressure spring controls the maximum pressure (psi)developed which dictates the level of assistance / effort. The size of the pressure relief orifice can also effect the output.
NB: The diameter of the torsion bar in the steering rack valve head is the main dictator of steering effort (and we are one of the very few people who have the knowledge and formulas to alter these to give specific results).
The flow control spring controls the flow (litres) of fluid and at what revs, ie the ‘falling rate’ characteristics; this is the feature that means you have maximum assistance at low engine revs, parking and manoeuvring, but less assistance out on the open road.
Classic Driving Development can offer springs that give 20% and 40% less assistance (making the steering heavier) or 20% lighter. With torsion bar alteration effort can be seriously reduced.
